West Michigan Kayaking Club Sponsors the Hugh Heward & Verlen Kruger Legacy Canoe Race 2026

The West Michigan Kayaking Club is proud to announce its sponsorship and participation in one of Michigan’s most historic paddling traditions—the Hugh Heward Challenge, hosted by the Verlen Kruger Legacy in 2026.

This partnership highlights the club’s ongoing commitment to honoring paddling heritage, building community on the water, and supporting long-distance endurance kayaking and canoeing throughout Michigan.

A Celebration of Michigan’s Paddling Heritage

The Hugh Heward Challenge is a legendary endurance event that retraces a historic 50-mile route on the Grand River, originally inspired by British fur trader Hugh Heward’s 1790 expedition.

Today, the event is organized by the Verlen Kruger Legacy, honoring one of the most accomplished paddlers in North American history, Verlen Kruger. The challenge invites paddlers of all levels to test endurance, navigation, and self-supported river travel in a truly iconic Michigan setting.

West Michigan Kayaking Club’s Role in 2026

As a sponsor and active paddling community, the West Michigan Kayaking Club will help promote participation, safety awareness, and community engagement for the 2026 Hugh Heward Challenge.

Club members will be encouraging paddlers to:

  • Participate in Quarter, Half, or Full Hugh routes
  • Train for endurance paddling and river navigation
  • Support river conservation efforts
  • Honor the legacy of Verlen Kruger and historic expedition paddlers
